Oxygen Therapy

You need some extra oxygen. This is known as supplemental oxygen. Your doctor prescribes supplemental oxygen if tests show the oxygen level in your blood is too low.

An oximetry test uses a small machine to measure the oxygen level in your blood. We will place a tape sensor or clip on your finger, earlobe or toe. The machine will beam light through your skin and blood. You cannot feel this.

From the machine we will get a percentage of your blood cells carrying oxygen. Normal oxygen levels are 90% or higher. There are some conditions where lower oxygen levels are okay.

Your medical condition may keep you from getting enough oxygen. The supplemental oxygen will help to ease your symptoms. It will also prevent future problems by getting more oxygen in your blood.

Your oxygen comes through a small plastic tube into your nostrils or a mask that covers your mouth. Oxygen is a colorless and odorless gas. It’s not addictive. It causes no side effects when used as directed by your health care team.
