Hypoxic Encephalopathy

Hypoxia occurs when there is a lack of oxygen to the body. This happens when your breathing stops. It also happens when there is a change in your normal breathing pattern.

Some examples are:

  • Heart attacks

  • Respiratory arrests

  • Drowning

  • Choking

A lack of oxygen can lead to an encephalopathy of the brain. This is a change in the brain structure. The brain does not function as it normally would. There is a chance of seizures from damage to the brain.  See our handout on seizures to learn more.

You or your family members have chosen to join our rehab program.  Our rehab program will help you recover to your highest level of independence.

You may have changes in the way you would normally function. The changes can be mild:

  • Forgetfulness

  • Slow or slurred speech

  • Tremors

  • Mood changes

  • Staggered walk

The changes can also be more major:

  • Decline in mental status

  • Memory loss

Not able to:

  • Speak

  • Walk

  • Care for yourself

  • Manage bodily functions

In some cases, a person may go into a deep sleep or coma and is unable to wake up.

We are here to answer your questions about your injury or rehab program.
