One to One Care

Supervision Program

When you have a brain injury you may need one to one care. Our brain injury team may feel you need to have supervision. Your nurse will talk with your family about your need for supervision.
After an injury to your brain it can be hard to judge your own ability.  You may be restless, easily upset, confused and reckless.

You may also be at risk for elopement.  Elopement is when you leave without our knowledge. Often it is because you think you need to do something you don’t really need to do.  For example, you may think you need to leave to feed a pet or to cook dinner for a spouse.

The behaviors are caused by your brain injury.  They can put you and others at risk.  You may need constant supervision.  We will work to balance your rest and activity. A set schedule may help.

The people who give supervision are called sitters. They have been trained to give this kind of care. They will work with your health care team to help you meet the goals of your rehab program.

With one to one care we can:

  • Enhance your rehab program.

  • Prevent falls and help keep you safe.

  • Orient you often to your surroundings.

  • Prevent or reduce over stimulation.

  • Help you feel less restless.

  • Balance activity and rest.

  • Reduce the need for restraints. (Patients often feel stressed if they have restraints.)

Your family can volunteer to spend time with you.  Please let your nurse know when they are available.  If your family is visiting and wants privacy, they can ask the sitter to leave. Before your family leaves they need to tell the nurse so your sitter can return.  You will need your sitter less when you can show you are making safe choices.

To prevent injury to yourself we will review goals with you.  The goals will focus on making sure you:

  • Telling us your needs.

  • Ask for help when you need it.

  • Stay on the unit.

We ask you to:

  • Do activities with your sitter to work toward your rehab goals.

  • Use your call light to ask for help.

  • Find your way around as you learn your surroundings.

If you or your family has any questions, please feel free to ask.
