Nutrition for Wound Healing
In order for your body to heal a wound, you need good nutrition. You can help by eating a balanced diet. Protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, zinc and fluids all play an important role in healing. You can get them by eating foods rich in these nutrients and by drinking plenty of fluid.
Protein
Great sources of protein include meat, poultry, fish, seafood and eggs. Dairy products such as milk and cheese or foods made with milk or cheese are also excellent sources. Other sources include peanut butter, beans, nuts and tofu.
Vitamin A
Liver and egg yolk are rich in vitamin A. It’s also in dark green and yellow or orange fruit and vegetables like spinach, squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, peaches, nectarines and mandarin oranges. Other sources include fortified milk, margarine and cheese.
Zinc
Pork, poultry, oysters, shellfish and liver are good sources of zinc. It’s also found in nuts like almonds and peanuts. Look for fortified breakfast cereals. Whole grains, raisins, raspberries, mandarin oranges, cranberries, dates and blueberries are other sources.
Vitamin C
Excellent sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits or juices, fortified juice, strawberries, green or red peppers and broccoli.
Fluids
Drink at least 6-8 cups of fluid per day. You can count water, juice, milk, coffee, tea, and other liquids.
Poor appetite
If your appetite is poor you may want to drink milkshakes or nutritional supplements. These are high in protein and other nutrients.
Snacks
These can help pack in all the nutrition you need. One good idea is to have a glass of orange juice and some crackers with cheese (high in vitamin C, vitamin A and protein!). If you like peanut butter, an extra spoonful here or there adds in more protein. These are just some ideas to get you thinking. Remember, little things add up!
In some cases a multiple vitamin with minerals may be a good idea. Ask your doctor if this is right for you.
