Bladder Scan

You could have some problems going to the bathroom after your injury.

At times we might need to find out how much urine is in your bladder.  A nurse will find out how well your bladder is working.

If you have not gone to the bathroom at regular times, or if your nurse feels you are not emptying your bladder completely, he or she will talk with your doctor.

Your doctor will order a test called a bladder scan.  A bladder scan is an ultrasound that measures the amount of urine in your bladder.  The scanner is a small device attached to a small box with a graph display.

The test takes only a few minutes and does not hurt.

Your nurse will review the test with you.

The nurse uses the test to see if you need a catheter (small, thin tube) in your bladder to empty it.

The nurse will keep a record of how much fluid your drink and how much urine you put out.  This record is called a bladder board.  Your nurse will use the results of the bladder scan along with your bladder board to help you find a plan that helps you get your bladder working again.

If you or your family has questions, please ask your nurse.
