Apraxia of Speech

What is apraxia?

A person with apraxia has trouble making the muscles work correctly to form words. It often occurs with aphasia.  It also can occur with muscle weakness and changes in how well a person can feel movements of their face and mouth.  However, these other problems do not cause the apraxia.

What does apraxia of speech sound like?

Speech may sound slow and cautious in mild cases.  The person may stop between words.

In more severe cases, you may not be able to understand when your loved one speaks.  Or he or she may make no sounds at all.

The speech and language pathologist will test your loved one and then make a treatment plan to improve your loved one’s speech.
